The hidden vestibular sense is the sense of movement and balance. Receptors for this sense are located in the inner ear. When you spin, swing, hang upside down, or are in a moving vehicle, you are stimulating the vestibular sense. Vestibular input can be easily overstimulating. It can be helpful to stop the movement and let the inner ear adjust to the lack of movement before starting the stimulation again. Deep pressure against the skin, and proprioceptive input felt by the joints and ligaments, can calm the system after vestibular stimulation. If you are not working with a qualified sensory smart OT to get vestibular input, please be gentle with yourself or your child to avoid discomfort.
