Hello everyone,
My daughter is studying in third grade. During the last parent conference, her teacher told me that my daughter is struggling to retain information and also have difficulty in completing assignments on time. She suggested me to test for ADHD. We consulted a pediatrician, and the doctor confirmed that the teacher was right. Online academic support can help combat issues with focus and help these students stay engaged in their work. I hope that it would definitely help my child to improve her skill. I would like to know whether online academic support has any disadvantages.
I am looking forward to hear your suggestions and thoughts.
Hi Ashley! I believe in testing for ADHD only after or in conjunction with an evaluation for SPD and educational testing that can suss out subtle problems such as working memory issues and slow processing speed. Understood.org is a terrific site for learning about these types of issues. Your link is to a coaching site in Canada is one I'll leave up, and I'm not sure what the laws are in your country regarding special education evaluation and services. Here in the U.S., federal education policy is VERY clear that RTI, or "response to intervention," which can be used to support a child who is struggling academically or behaviorally, is NOT to be used as a substitute for special education evaluations and potentially, services. We went into detail on this in the latest edition of Raising a Sensory Smart Child. So while private tutoring can help, do find out what your child's rights are including his or her right to a timely special education evaluation.
With the pandemic, many teachers, parents, and school districts are trying to figure out how to do evaluations and deliver services. Certainly, the informal checklist on this site can help parents, students, and teachers when a student seems to be struggling with sensory issues, which can be a HUGE factor in a student's ability to focus and attend: https://7714a815-77d2-4079-a996-a691eea67478.filesusr.com/ugd/6391a5_4b875d99cb8e4af78509cd3443658b2b.pdf Moreover, slow processing and working memory issues take enormous focus. Has your child been evaluated for those?
